OpenSUSE Leap 15.5
Whats new in OpenSUSE Leap 15.5?
The new OpenSUSE Leap 15.5 release doesn’t offer much in the way of new features, instead it focuses on bug fixes, security updates, and minor updates. There is an updated version of the 5.14 Linux kernel, the distribution ships with Plasma 5.27, and there is a repository for Open H. 264 codecs which is automatically enabled. The most notable changes this release include an improved Software app, new multitasking settings, and enhanced power management features.
Why Choose Leap 15.5 over Fedora or Ubuntu?
Where Fedora’s strength is cutting-edge software, and Ubuntu’s strength is in its ease of use and massive community, at first glance openSUSE might just seem like yet another fish in the distro sea. openSUSE has a trick up its sleeve though: YaST. Its unassuming name “Yet another Setup Tool” doesn’t exactly inspire excitement, but once you begin to delve deeper into its capabilities, the more you will realise how powerful YaST is.
Written in Ruby, YaST can run in text or GUI mode, allowing the user to configure a vast array of OS components in one place. This includes easy access to software package management, boot loader configuration, the disk partitioner, services manager, network services, logs, firewall settings, security centre, and Samba shares, just to name a few.
Leap 15.5, which is based on SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 Service Pack 5, will receive maintenance and security updates until the end of 2024. This will provide users with plenty of time to transition to the release’s successor; a successor has yet to be confirmed.
